Development of Character Education Training Modules Based on Local Wisdom

Abstract

The increasing moral challenges faced by students in the digital era highlight the need for effective character education that is culturally relevant and sustainable. Although teacher training programs are widely available, they often lack systematic instructional materials that integrate local wisdom and support consistent implementation within schools. This study aimed to develop and evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a local wisdom-based character education training module for teachers. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach based on the Borg and Gall model, modified into seven stages. The module was validated by material experts, module experts, and practitioners before being implemented through an operational field test involving 11 principals, teachers, and staff at a junior high school in Surabaya, Indonesia. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, expert validation percentages, paired-sample analysis, and N-Gain scores to determine learning improvement. The module achieved a very high feasibility rating, with an average expert validation score of 84.38%. Operational testing demonstrated a significant improvement in participants' competence following the training (p < .001), with a high average N-Gain score of 0.8083, indicating substantial learning gains. The module integrates local wisdom, school leadership, assessment instruments, and Follow-up Plans (RTL) into a comprehensive framework for teacher professional development. The developed module is feasible and effective for strengthening teachers' competence in implementing character education. It offers a culturally responsive and systematic professional development model that can support the sustainable institutionalization of character education in schools while providing a foundation for future implementation and evaluation in broader educational contexts.
