Empowerment Design with Contextual Learning to Improve Parenting Knowledge and Skills of Couples of Childbearing Age in Coastal Areas of Banten Province
Abstract
Parenting knowledge and practical caregiving skills remain limited among childbearing-age couples in many coastal communities despite the availability of abundant fishery resources that can support child nutrition and family well-being. Existing interventions rarely integrate parenting education, nutrition, and locally relevant practical skills within a single contextual learning framework. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a contextual learning-based empowerment model to improve parenting knowledge and practical fish-processing skills among couples of childbearing age in the coastal areas of Banten Province, Indonesia.This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the Four-D (4D) model, consisting of Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate stages. The model was implemented among 80 couples of childbearing age from two coastal villages. Parenting knowledge and practical fish-processing skills were measured using validated pre-test and post-test instruments. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and normalized gain (N-Gain) analysis.Parenting knowledge increased by 17.13% in Lontar Village and 18.04% in Tamanjaya Village, while practical fish-processing skills improved by 17.42% and 15.90%, respectively. The N-Gain scores ranged from 0.45 to 0.51, indicating moderate learning effectiveness across both outcomes. These findings suggest that contextual learning enhanced participants’ ability to connect parenting practices with local food resources and everyday household experiences.The study demonstrates that integrating parenting education, child nutrition, and locally relevant practical skills within a contextual learning framework can strengthen family empowerment in coastal communities. The proposed model contributes an adaptable community-based educational framework that can inform parenting, nutrition, and family empowerment programs in similar socio-economic settings.
